چکیده

This paper analyzes a model of a statistical multiplexer for packetized voice. The packet arrival stream from a single voice source is approximated by an interrupted Poisson process (IPP). The multiplexer is modeled by a single-server queue with general service time distribution, whose input is superposition of independent and identical IPPs. The steady-state probabilities of this queueing system are analyzed by the supplementary variable technique. Three methods for deciding the IPP parameters are discussed and comparisons with simulations show the 2moments and peakedness match method to be the most accurate.

A Markov Modulated Characterization of Packetized Voice and Data Traffic and Related Statistical Multiplexer Performance

We study the performance of a statistical multiplexer whose inputs consist of a superposition of packetized voice sources and data. The performance analysis predicts voice packet delay distributions, which usually have a stringent requirement, as well as data packet delay distributions. The superposition is approximated by a correlated Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP), which is chosen su...

Packet Loss in Finite - Bu ered Voice Multiplexers 1

In this paper we examine three di erent approximation techniques for modeling packet loss in nite-bu er voice multiplexers. The performance models studied di er primarily in the manner in which the superposition of the voice sources (i.e., the arrival process) is modeled. The rst approach models the superimposed voice sources as a renewal process and performance calculations are based only on t...

Traffic smoothing effects of bit dropping in a packet voice multiplexer

Recent studies have shown that the superposition of packet sequences generated by packetized voice sources with speech detection exhibit high burstiness due to inherent correlations between successive interarrival times in the superposition stream. In a packet voice multiplexer without bit dropping, these correlations tend to cause significantly larger queueing delays and packet losses than wou...

Characterization and multiplexing of correlated traffic from sources with different time constants

Single server, discrete-time queueing systems under independent or Markov arrival processes and deterministic service requirements have been studied widely in the past. The xed service time is usually set equal to one deening the time unit of the discrete-time system axis. Such queueing systems have been adopted for the modeling of statistical multiplexers in slotted communication networks supp...
